At Kelley Alliance, activity checks are a routine part of many investigations. Most involve patience, attention to detail, and a lot of time spent observing normal daily activities. Occasionally, however, an assignment takes an unexpected turn.
One of our investigators was assigned to conduct an activity check on “John,” an individual who had reported significant physical limitations following a workplace injury. According to available information, John experienced substantial difficulty with prolonged standing, walking, bending, and lifting.
The investigator arrived early and established surveillance near the subject’s residence. As often happens, the first few hours were uneventful. The investigator reviewed notes, maintained observation, and waited.
Around mid-morning, John’s garage door opened. The investigator immediately focused on documenting the subject’s activities.
John emerged wearing athletic clothing, loaded a golf bag into the trunk of his vehicle, and departed.
“Interesting,” the investigator thought.
The subject was followed to a local golf course where he met several friends. From a discreet location, the investigator began documenting the day’s activities.
For the next several hours, John walked the course, carried clubs, bent repeatedly to place tees, retrieved golf balls, and executed full golf swings without any visible difficulty.
The assignment appeared to be developing exactly as expected.
Then came the 14th hole.
After slicing his drive deep into a water hazard, John became determined to recover his ball. Despite the availability of countless replacement golf balls, he carefully climbed down a muddy embankment and reached toward the water’s edge.
Within seconds, his footing disappeared.
The investigator watched as John slid approximately ten feet down the bank and landed directly in the shallow water with an impressive splash that could likely be heard from the next fairway.
His golfing companions doubled over with laughter.
John emerged completely soaked but apparently uninjured, holding something triumphantly above his head.
His golf ball.
At this point, even the investigator had to suppress a smile.
The remainder of the round proceeded without incident, although John spent the next hour walking the course in wet clothing while enduring relentless jokes from his friends.
When the investigator completed the report, the documentation accurately reflected the subject’s physical activities throughout the day. However, the incident also served as a reminder that surveillance work often includes moments that nobody could possibly predict.
Investigations are serious business, but every investigator who has spent enough time in the field has a story that still makes them laugh years later.
This was one of those stories.
The Takeaway
Activity checks provide objective documentation of observed activities and behaviors. While the goal is always to gather accurate information, real life has a way of producing unexpected moments that remind us there is a human element behind every case.
At Kelley Alliance, professionalism remains the priority—but sometimes the job comes with a front-row seat to situations that are simply too funny to forget.
